Cult members kill Akwa Ibom youth leader

Some gunmen suspected to be members of Icelaand , one of the 33 outlawed cults in Akwa Ibom State, have killed a youth leader , Udeme Akpan.
It was learnt that, Akpan, a father of three , until his murder on Thursday , was the youth leader of Ikot Edet Community in the Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
Further fact emerged that Akpan, who was at the forefront of fighting cult menace in his community, was served a notice to pay some undisclosed amount of money to the cult or risked being killed.
Family sources told our correspondent that Akpan had escaped to Ibio Nnung Achat, a neighbouring community, as a fugitive, where the hoodlums killed him .
“ The cult obtained information through their network and killed him there .
“ The shooting this morning ( Thursday ) was so heavy that policemen stationed at Ibio Nnung Achat, had to scamper for safety ,” a source said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer , Mr. Odiko Ogbeche , said the action could jeopardise the peace deal the government, security agencies and stakeholders were trying to broker for the cult groups to drop their arms .
He assured that the security agencies would have no other option but to declare mass police action to dislodge the hoodlums and mop up small arms and light weapons in the affected communities.
